Why It Matters​

Stock Android is a product that makes money from your data. Every 4.5 minutes, a phone sends data to Google’s servers even without active use - this is a documented finding from a Trinity College Dublin study. A custom ROM removes this layer completely. A cheap phone with the right firmware is better than an expensive phone running stock Android.

Choosing a Device​

If you want maximum protection on a budget​

• Pixel 6a - the optimal choice in 2026. Available on the secondary market for $100-150. Fully supports GrapheneOS. Includes the Titan M2 hardware security chip. Verified boot with custom keys. There is a performance difference compared with the Pixel 9, but the difference in security is minimal.
• Pixel 5 - $80-120 on the secondary market. Supports CalyxOS. Good performance for everyday tasks.
• Pixel 4a - $50-80 on the secondary market. Supports CalyxOS and iodéOS. The cheapest option with a hardware security chip, but Cellebrite has tools for this model.

If you have almost no money​

• Motorola G series - available on the secondary market from $30-50. Supports iodéOS and LineageOS.
  It lacks the hardware security chip found in Pixels, but completely removes Google telemetry.

If you want to avoid standing out​

• Pixels have long been associated with privacy in certain circles. Someone who knows what to look for may have questions when they see a Pixel. For better anonymity, choose another option.
• Samsung Galaxy A series - Galaxy A32, A52, or A53. These are among the most common Android phones in the world; there are millions of them, so nobody will pay attention. They support iodéOS and LineageOS.
• Xiaomi Redmi Note series - extremely widespread, especially in the CIS and Asia. It looks like an ordinary budget phone. Supports iodéOS and LineageOS.

The optimal low-profile setup is a Samsung Galaxy A52 or Xiaomi Redmi Note for $50-100 on the secondary market, plus iodéOS: externally, it's an ordinary budget Android phone that half the people around you may already have; internally, it's a private system without Google.

Which Operating System to Install​

• GrapheneOS - only for the Pixel 6a and newer. Maximum security. Includes hardened malloc, Sandboxed Google Play, profiles with separate encryption and verified boot.
• CalyxOS - for the Pixel 4a and 5, as well as Fairphone devices. The closest GrapheneOS alternative for older Pixels. Includes microG for app compatibility, the Datura firewall, a Panic Button and encrypted backups through Seedvault.
• iodéOS - for Samsung, Xiaomi, Motorola and other devices. Includes a system-level tracker blocker. The best choice for devices that should not attract attention.
• LineageOS - for a widest range of devices. A basic level of protection without additional security patches. Better than stock Android, but weaker than CalyxOS/iodéOS.

Hidden Spaces and Encryption​

• Profiles - CalyxOS and iodéOS support standard Android profiles. An additional profile with a separate password is encrypted separately. If the main profile is inspected, the additional profile remains inaccessible without the second password.
• Shelter or Insular - create an isolated work profile. Apps in Shelter are completely isolated from the main profile and the data doesn't overlap.
• Cryptomator - provides encrypted folders for files. Without the password, they appear as random data. It works locally without cloud storage.
• Photok - an encrypted gallery. Photos are stored in encrypted form and are not visible in the standard gallery.
• EDS Lite - supports VeraCrypt-compatible containers on Android. Create a container using VeraCrypt on a computer and open it with EDS Lite on the phone.

Minimal App Stack​

• F-Droid - the primary app store without trackers. Download all the apps listed below from there.
• Orbot - routes all traffic through Tor. In proxy mode, it can run alongside a VPN without conflicts (configure Telegram and other apps to use SOCKS5 at 127.0.0.1 port 9050).
• Tor Browser - anonymous browsing. It works alongside any VPN without conflicts.
• Mullvad VPN - includes a kill switch, DAITA protection against traffic analysis and encrypted DNS.
• Signal - the standard for secure communications. Disappearing messages should always be enabled.
• SimpleX - has no user identifier at all. Intended for highly anonymous communications.
• Briar - works without internet access through Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
• KeePassDX - a local password manager without cloud storage.
• Aegis Authenticator - a two-factor authentication app with encrypted backups.
• Dangerzone - safely opens documents from untrusted sources. Available through F-Droid.
• Scrambled Exif - removes metadata from photos before they are sent.

Cellebrite: An Honest Assessment​

Older Pixels are more vulnerable than newer models - Cellebrite has tools for the Pixel 4a. Samsung and Xiaomi devices are also supported by Cellebrite. The most important protection is simple: turn off the phone if there is a risk it will be seized. A powered-off device in a BFU state is an order of magnitude harder to break into, even with professional tools. The data is encrypted and the keys are not stored in memory. An up-to-date firmware version with the latest security patches closes known vulnerabilities. Update regularly.

Conclusion​

A Pixel 6a with GrapheneOS for $100-150 on the secondary market provides 95% of the protection of a flagship Pixel 9 at 20% of the price. It's the best investment in security in the budget segment. If even that is too expensive, a Pixel 4a with CalyxOS for $50-80 is an order of magnitude better than any stock Android phone at any price point. If avoiding attention is important, choose a Samsung or Xiaomi device with iodéOS: an ordinary phone on the outside, with a private system inside.
