Law Enforcement officers from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation warned of a new unpleasant trend: hackers break into various "smart" devices, and then call home to their victims a special forces outfit (the so-called "swatting", from the English swatting) to broadcast what is happening live.

"Recently, criminals have used victims' smart devices, including home surveillance systems and video and audio support, to conduct swatting attacks, " the FBI wrote.

As a rule, compromise is caused by devices whose owners repeatedly use the same passwords for different sites and services. These recorded data leak into the network, fall into the hands of intruders, and they use them to hack "smart" gadgets.

Having gained access to someone else's IoT device, "pranksters" call the police and report that a crime has occurred or is taking place at the victim's address. It is worth noting that such calls are usually made using special darknet services or bots, that is, it is very difficult to track them.

"When law enforcement agencies arrive at the named address, the criminal watches what is happening in a live broadcast and interacts with the police through a camera and speakers. In some cases, the perpetrators also broadcast the incident live on various platforms."

Law enforcement officers say that they cooperate with manufacturers and suppliers of "smart" devices so that they better inform their customers what passwords they need to create for their gadgets.
