Two Russian citizens have been arrested in Thailand for their involvement in over 1,000 ransomware attacks. Their detention occurred as part of the special operation Phobos Aetor, named after the ransomware used by the criminals. The operation involved law enforcement from 14 countries around the world, including the FBI, as well as Europol. The first reports of the arrests came from Thai police, who acted at the request of Switzerland. In addition to the Russians, two other Europeans living in Phuket were also apprehended. According to authorities, the damage caused by the criminals is estimated at $16 million. On the same day, websites associated with the 8Base group, which included the suspects, ceased to operate. It was later revealed that Europol had seized 27 servers belonging to the group. Shortly after, the U.S. Department of Justice filed official charges against the two arrested Russians on 11 counts. Their names were disclosed as 33-year-old Roman Berezhnoy and 39-year-old Yegor Glebov. The department clarified that they were operators of 8Base and Affiliate 2803, which used Phobos in their attacks.
