In 2021, the number of attacks on operating systems (OS) and cloud infrastructure based on Linux will increase, IBM expects. \

The problem will also affect Russian government agencies, which are switching to domestic Linux-based operating systems as part of import substitution, experts say. Entrepreneurs who have started actively using the cloud against the background of the coronavirus pandemic are facing increased costs: hackers can break into cloud environments and use them for mining cryptocurrencies, as well as DDoS attacks.

In 2020 alone, hackers created 56 categories of viruses for Linux, which is 40% more than a year earlier. Viruses will also affect Russian users. This was stated by Oleg Bakshinsky, a leading adviser on information security issues at IBM in Russia.

Bakshinsky said that the attackers began to use the extensible computing power of Linux-based cloud environments. At times of peak loads, the system resources will be expanded for an additional fee, with the help of a special service. Thus, attackers gain unauthorized access to the victim's cloud environment, increasing the company's costs for paying for cloud services.

The presence of the problem has already been confirmed, and the Federal Service for Technical and Export Control will create a research center worth 300 million rubles to check the security of operating systems based on the Linux kernel.
