AES Crypt differs from VeraCrypt and TrueCrypt in the absence of on-the-fly encryption, which is not allowed to mount cryptographic containers. This program can encrypt a file and decrypt it, but often you don't need to do more than that.
AES Crypt is a free program, with the exception of the iOS version, based on the AES algorithm (256 bits). Today, this algorithm is considered exemplary-reliable and well-analyzed, it is accepted as a standard by the US government (I do not recommend blindly trusting their standards for at least the Dual EC_DRBG algorithm with a backdoor for the NSA). There is no choice of algorithms and the possibility of combined encryption.
You probably have a logical question: why would you need another encryption program when you already have TrueCrypt and VeraCrypt?
There are several reasons for installing AES Crypt, the first of which is as follows: sometimes you just need to encrypt a file, without creating a cryptographic container, without mounting it. And AES Crypt solves this problem perfectly, the file is encrypted in a few clicks and is just as easy to decrypt.
The second reason is cross-platform. You can use AES Crypt on all your devices, including iOS and Android. By encrypting a photo on your iPhone, you can easily decrypt it on your computer running the Windows operating system. Users of TrueCrypt and VeraCrypt have never dreamed of anything like this.
AES Crypt also has weaknesses. Using AES Crypt, you should remember that after encryption, the original file remains on your computer, and it must be deleted. But you need to do this correctly if you don't want your deleted file to be restored by your detractors in a few minutes.
Another feature of AES Crypt is the name of the encrypted file. We have already talked about the importance of the name of the cryptographic container: it should not indicate the content or importance in any way. It is desirable that the names of important documents do not indicate their importance and content, although this is not always possible. AES Crypt does not change the file name, and you should change it manually if it does not meet the requirements described above.
Another disadvantage of AES Crypt is that it is not possible to encrypt folders. This problem is solved by pre-archiving the folder and then encrypting the archive.
